Yesterday we paid a visit to the dog park so that Tyler and Sabrina could do some agility work.

Today we set off on the ferry, took a trolley and met up with Chip.

We have already enjoyed the San Diego trolley but this vintage coach was still a new experience in people watching. The F line runs trolley cars rescued from other cities around the world. The next time you (plural) visit us let's include this trip in the itinerary. Well worth it. Details here. Be sure to watch the short video.
Tyler was very quiet on the trolley ride. Suffice to say, real San Franciscans were on board - this is not a tourist attraction. Were we put off by the passenger with the massive bag of recyclables or the transvestites taking glamour shots of each other ("The whole trolley is watching us!")? No, we were not troubled in the least. Given the mono-culture of our neighborhood trips like this will be good for us all.
Our particular trolley had serviced the streets of Milan for many years. A bay window graced the rear of the trolley and there was hardwood throughout.
Brunch in the Castro included a banana-Nutella crepe for Tyler.

Then we trolleyed back and waited for our ship to come in.

This morning we gathered ourselves bright and early to enjoy a Run to the Far Side. This 10k race winds through Golden Gate Park and features many runners dressed as characters from the Gary Larson's cartoon.
We arrived late for the start and had to park about a mile away. The temp hovered just above 50 so we bundled Tyler up and ran just to keep warm. By the time we made it to the start the race was well underway. Let's just say that we had the course to ourselves.
Tyler was a trooper and made it jsut past mile 3. Then he really started crying. I think that he was tired of being in the car seat and stroller for what had been over an hour. So our 10K turned into a 5k and we went to the finish.
The good news: we ran sub 10 minute miles while I pushed his jogging stroller laden with a full diaper bag and our cameras.
Here are some pictures from the end of the race. Tyler was very happy once free from the stroller:

With the joy and commotion of Tyler's birthday celebration a recent memory, I can quietly contemplate what a wonderful year it has been.
Tyler and I woke up at 6:30 this morning and drifted downstairs to let Millie sleep. We played hard in the corral for an hour and then he enjoyed a leisurely breakfast of:
- string cheese
- mozzarella cheese
- apple sauce
- yogurt
- bananas
- leftover birthday (carrot) cake
All of these were enjoyed in various quantities and combinations. He didn't share much with Sabrina during this meal. However, he did allow her to clean his hands. Who needs a finger bowl?
We played for another hour or so and then woke Millie up. He finally crashed in my arms at 10:45 and is napping as I write.
During your moment of thanks today give a line or two to Tyler. If you are lingering over your computer then review the events of a year ago at the original Tyler site here and here. Here are some pictures to refresh your memory.
One year, one hour old.
Less than an hour old.

What a great day. Thanks to all who shared in Tyler's first birthday, both live and online. Tyler's mood was stellar and he enjoyed everyone's company. It seems like the teething pain may have eased for the time being.
I just copied over 200 photos onto my computer to it will take a bit to sort them out. Here are a few to enjoy.

It has been a hectic week. Could be the holiday frenzy in the air.
Monday afterschool I picked up Tyler from daycare and ran back to school to give a test. He happily played with a scrap of newspaper as was a very good boy.
On Tuesday our big activity was to go the park and hit the swings.
The park was crowded with the afternoon nanny shift. Ok, there were all sorts of people there. But nannies are visible. Irrelevant.
Tyler is happily swinging away next to another kid and her mom (?). A red headed girl came over and asked the woman next to me if she could swing. Bear in mind- there are only two swings. The mom (who may be redhead's mom?) explains that Tyler is using the swing and that she will have to wait her turn.
At this point the little imp starts in with "I hate you." and "Bad baby". Who knew that the playground could generate such passion? Now, I was curious as to how the mom would handle this. I'm always eager for a learning experience. So the mom says, "If you talk like that again we might have to leave the park." Little girl continues with tirade while mom continues her hollow threats. Eventually, little girl calmed down after being told that she would only have to wait four more minutes.
I am still not sure what Tyler and I learned from this encounter. We didn't rush our departure from the swing, however.
A funnier moment at the playground occurred when I tried to get him to walk on SAND. Apparently, he prefers carpet. We will have to work on this.
Thursday was the longest day that I have shared with Tyler. We started well testing out our webcast with my mom over breakfast.
He was a bit grumpy in the morning and this escalated throughout the day. He had a bit of a fever and was very clingy. Normally, he will play happily in his corral while I putter around the room. Today I couldn't put him down without heart rending wailing.
At one point we went outside to stop a tantrum.
We took a some self portraits and some shots of the trees outside of his room.
This worked for a few minutes. Then it stopped.
So we went inside and played with the light switches. Under supervision, of course. This didn't last too long.
He slept fitfully during naps and we were both wiped by the time Millie came home.
That night was a rough one for Millie. He stayed in bed with us and could not get comfortable. He cried and cried every time he tried to feed and looked at us with such a list expression. Teething was the most likely culprit. However, Millie found a rash on his legs during bathtime and so stayed home on Friday to take him to the doctor. Who confirmed our suspicions. Teething and a virus. This too shall pass.
Luckily, Millie's mom arrived Thursday afternoon and we had a welcome set of experienced hands to help us. Tyler's mood has improved and we are having less crying and more of good old Tyler. Let's hope that this trend continues.
Millie and her mom baked Tyler's birthday cake tonight. The batter was a surprisingly good mixture of carrots, raisins, eggs and apple juice concentrate. No sugar.

Click here to see a selection of November photos. Some eating, reading, standing, walking and even a salamander. Action packed.
Digital cameras
Where would I be without a digital camera? Waiting in line for my processed photos, that's where. Then I would go through each roll and shake my head at half or more of the pictures. Then put them in a shoebox stored in a closet. If you, or someone you know, has not taken the digital camera plunge it's time to at least consider crossing over. To support the night class that I teach on this very subject visit. www.rodmilstead.com/digitalcamera.
Consumer Reports rated these three cameras as best buys:
Nikon Coolpix 2200
Canon PowerShot A60
Fuji Finepix A330
Say goodbye to film. Say hello to instant gratification.

Tyler clapped today. Millie has seen this before - my first time. And the video camera was handy. I will let you know when I post the video.
Thursday's break in the rain afforded Sabrina, Tyler and I the opportunity to get outside. Cabin fever was high and it was good to breathe fresh air. The hills are already giving way to green thanks to the wet weather.
I bundled Tyler up and had to strip a few layers when the sun popped out.
While Tyler's solid food intake is increasing in volume and variety he still enjoys a good bottle of milk.
Last night we went to Chevy's to enjoy a fundraising dinner for my school's paper, the Jolly Roger. Twenty percent of participating dinner checks went to the paper. Chevy's is a good place for Tyler as the background music muffles his vocal enjoyment of dinner.
Today is John Phillip Sousa's birthday. He would have been 150. Click here to enjoy some of his music.

I made this pie the other day while feeding Tyler lunch. It is that easy. The name Easter Pie is a bit misleading. It is simple enough to be an everyday desert but would also earn compliments at an office party. The recipe came from Everyday Italian on FoodTV. Enjoy.
Easter Pie
Recipe courtesy Giada De Laurentiis
Recipe SummaryDifficulty: Easy Prep Time: 30 minutes Cook Time: 45 minutes Yield: 8 to 10 servings User Rating:
3/4 cup powdered sugar, plus extra for garnish
3 large eggs
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1 tablespoon orange zest
1 (15-ounce) container whole milk ricotta cheese
1/2 cup cooked short-grained rice
1/3 cup toasted pine nuts
6 sheets fresh phyllo sheets or frozen, thawed (has to be done overnight in the fridge)
3/4 stick (3 ounces) unsalted butter, melted
Blend 3/4 cup of powdered sugar, eggs, vanilla, orange zest and ricotta in a food processor until smooth. Stir in the rice and pine nuts. Set the ricotta mixture aside.
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
Lightly butter a 9-inch glass pie dish. Lay 1 phyllo sheet over the bottom and up the sides of the dish, allowing the phyllo to hang over the sides. Brush the phyllo with the melted butter. Top with a second sheet of phyllo dough, laying it in the opposite direction as the first phyllo sheet. Continue layering the remaining sheets of phyllo sheets, alternating after each layer and buttering each sheet. Spoon the ricotta mixture into the dish. Fold the overhanging phyllo dough over the top of the filling to enclose it completely. Brush completely with melted butter.
Bake the pie until the phyllo is golden brown and the filling is set, about 35 minutes. Transfer the pan to a rack and cool completely. Sift powdered sugar over the pie and serve.

When Millie picked Tyler up at daycare this afternoon Shamsi (daycare provider) told the following story. Tyler was playing clapping game Shamsi and the other kids. He enjoyed it immensely. Later on he WALKED over to her and grabbed her pants leg and began clapping his hands.
He said "dast".
First word you say?! Sure. Dast is Farsi for clap as in clap your hands. Shamsi and family are Persian and he hears it all the time.
Sign of the apocalypse?
On the heels of yesterday's election results we had an unexpected, booming thunder and lightning storm this afternoon. Thick dark clouds clung to the hills as we were treated to the show. Then the rain opened up and poured.
When I got home there was hail everywhere. It looked like we had a brief snow flurry.

Tyler has declared that he has reached the end of his road to the White House. He would make this announcement in person but he is too busy enjoying a bath.
Tyler was up early making one final campaign stop with his mommy.
The rest of the morning was devoted to a leisurely breakfast followed by relaxing in his corral. After a long nap and energetic lunch the candidate made his way to the local polling place.
Monday, November 01, 2004
Tomorrow Tyler and I will go to the polls for a photo opp as he casts his ballot. Be sure to wear your Tyler for President gear when you vote tomorrow.
When I picked Tyler up from day care this afternoon he did his best to walk towards me. Then he was distracted by another child and started waving. At the other kid. Waving is very exciting for all of us.
Click here for a little video about Tyler's bedtime ritual. If you are watching this at work be prepared to share a lullaby with everyone in the office.

I think Tyler is having a sympathetic sugar rush right now. No, we didn't give him any candy and we didn't gorge ourselves on our hoard. Millie put him to bed about a half an hour ago-wide awake. We listened to him over the baby monitor as he chattered away and played with the mural. Eventually he began to cry so I picked him up and settled back in the chair. He took my hand and put it on top of his head. Thinking he wanted me to rub his forehead that's what I did. Then he grabbed my hand and stopped its motion. After a few rounds of this it occurred to me that the nightlight was too bright.
Too late. He is awake and happily playing in his corral.
On Saturday I noticed that Tyler showed a preference to walk instead of crawl. Fix or six steps is not uncommon. He continues to be elated when his upright and standing free. The thrills are greater when he walks somewhere.
Saturday night we dressed him up in his costume and went to a great Halloween party. Two Moon Bounces out front and a slew of costumed guests inside the house. Tyler didn't know which way to look first.
We took a few good pictures last night and some marginal ones today (he has a cold). To see Tyler's first Halloween costume click here!
Wednesday, October 20, 2004
Tyler waved goodbye to Wendy when she was leaving last night.
This past Tuesday Tyler and I purchased his Halloween costume. Wait and see.
The contents of my pockets have changed in the last few months. When I empty them each night I am likely to find:
-at least one pacifier.
-not more than one sock.
-several wadded up tissues.
-an energy bar wrapper.
-a Tupperware containing Cheerios.
-keys in my left pocket (moved from my right because I can't hold Tyler and pull keys out of my right pocket).
Cooler weather has arrived in the past few days- 47 degrees when I left for work this morning. Yesterday, Tyler and broke out the winter wear. He wore the hat for awhile before discovering the string. More fun that way.
Today he went for the lumberjack look.
Monday, October 18, 2004
Click here to enjoy Tyler's first steps. The slow motion will really help you to analyze each step. A few hours after this video was taken he took at least four solid steps. I hope to catch the expression on his face when he walks. He is thrilled to be upright and under control.
All good things must come to an end. Tyler does fall gently to earth. Thanks to a good attitude and cushioned diaper he takes it all in stride (pun intended).
After you view the video be sure to visit the photo page to see pics from Cindy and Clem's most recent visit.
Big storm (California style) due in this evening. Wondering how Tyler and I will spend our first rainy day? So am I. I guarantee that a trip to the grocery store and some other errands will keep us busy.
Saturday, October 16, 2004
Millie was trapped in another day of class as required by the No Child Left Behind Act (which is a total farce) so Tyler and I were on our own. We eventually made our way to Muir Woods and had a great hike. More on this day when I get the video edited.
BUT, you can enjoy the photos now. Visit the photo plage and click on the link to the October pics. I am trying a new format for the photos and would appreciate some feedback.

Not five minutes ago Tyler linked two steps without any support. WALKING!!
Saturday, October 09, 2004
Although Tyler was not included in the recent debates the campaign continues at a steady pace. Don't miss out on these limited edition campaign products available at http://www.cafepress.com/milsteadware . Get your gear today!

Tyler continues to practice his standing skills and is quickly graduating from high objects to low objects for assistance. It is now common for him to stand at the side of his Lego bucket, block in each hand, with his feet flat and his body balanced. On Thursday, he pushed himself into a free standing position from a low object. This is a big change from the pull up manuever of the past.
He shows little interest in walking when you hold his hands but is happy to walk behind one of his push toys. Crawling is still the most useful mode of transport, however.
Last night he made the first attempts at standing up without any support. One knee goes under him and he pushed up mightily with the other bent leg.
We are going on a child proofing mission today.

Two useful and interesting websites:
http://www.searchsystems.net/ provides dozens of links to people finding resources. Creepy, fun and useful. This goes well beyond looking up someone's phone number. I found SSN's from some deceased relatives.
http://terraserver.microsoft.com/default.aspx is a database of satellite and aerial photographs that can be searched by address or placename. I found color photos of our home taken in February that were amazing. Look at this detail:

There are at least five types of food in this picture. Can you name them? This reminds me of Highlights for Children magazine.
Tyler slept in until after 7 and then we all spent the morning with our friend George. Grandpa Wayne is due by later today to drop off a few moments as he prepares to move back to West Virgnia.

Today I learned just how far Tyler can reach. In his eternal search for food he reached for my cereal bowl. You can see the result. Tyler was intrigued.
Tyler also had a checkup today. All is well. He weighs 19 pounds, 15 ounces and is just over 29 inches long. He had one lone vaccination for meningitis and took it with some tears. The February appointment brings FIVE shots. I am not looking forward to that visit.

My mom found the missing "Petting Sabrina" video problem. It is fixed.
FYI- our "high speed"/high cost cable Internet connection is on the blink for the second time in as many weeks. If our email response time is slow chances are we can't read or respond to email. The cable guy arrives on Thursday.
Hurricane Jeanne has blown through Ocala and my mom has weathered another hurricane. The power went out a few times amidst the wind and rain but otherwise all is well.
FYI: The next hurricane name is Lisa. Stay tuned.
Saturday, September 25, 2004
This morning we hiked for a little over an hour in the hills behind our house. As Tyler appoaches 20 pounds, the value of the workout has increased as well. I am feeling those hills right now.
Click here to see the three new videos added just minutes ago. Check out part one and two of Cindy and Clem's recent video. Then finish up with a short clip of Tyler petting Sabrina.
On Friday, Tyler was introduced to watermelon while at daycare. Add it to the list-very popular.
Once again, my mom prepares for another hurricane. The fourth to hit Florida. Not since 1888 has a state been hit FOUR times in the same season (Texas last time around).

At almost 10 months of age, here's the latest:
-he weighs about 19 pounds, 11 ounces.
-he eats Cheerios with relish. Also on food list: yogurt, rice, puffed rice, squash, sweet potato, pasta, green beans, pears, apple sauce, peaches, some crackers, string cheese and bananas.
-he watches us eat and sometimes lunges for our food.
-he can drink from a sippy cup without help.
-he can drink from a water bottle with help.
-he loves to watch, touch, and feed Sabrina. Anything involving Sabrina is thrilling.
-he can crawl quickly.
-he can climb the stairs to the second floor under close supervision.
-he will find the smallest leaf and try to it in his mouth. Yes, we stop him.
-he can pull himself into a standing position.
-once standing, he can let go and stay upright for a few seconds.
-he can lower himself and sit down under control.
-bright sunlight makes him sneeze.
-he can pick things up using a pincer grasp.
-he wakes up at least twice a night.

Click here to enjoy four new Tyler videos. Everything from shopping cart adventures to singing in the rain.
I wanted to get these videos up before putting together the video of Cindy and Clem's visit. Tyler enjoyed his time with his aunt and uncle and I think they feel the same way. Stay tuned.

We spoke too soon. Mom lost power at 4 am Sunday morning and has been without ever since. She has a phone that plugs into the wall yet there wasn't enough power coming through the line to make it ring. I never thought about this problem.
They have a fridge full of food that is rapidly defrosting. Hopefully, by tomorrow, she won't be one of the six million Floridians without power.
Tyler ate puffed rice today. Very exciting (for us).

This just in from my Mom in Florida, "Went outside a minute ago. It is 81 degrees and a bit breezy." The hurricane is moving her way at 6 miles an hour.
Mom and Curt are staying put as Frances dramatically sweeps the Presidential election off of the American consciousness. They have sandbagged and stocked up on food and are now very patiently waiting for the storm to arrive.
Mom lives in Ocala.

After three days of fever a rash appeared on Tyler's torso. We initially wrote it off as prickly heat. It didn't disappear on the second day and a call to Kaiser provided roseola as the diagnosis.
So we skipped swimming lessons today. Tyler took a TWO HOUR morning nap. We took a long walk this afternoon and he napped a bit in the stroller. Millie has back to school night this evening so I was in for the long haul. Millie and I strategized as to how best to get him to sleep, how to deal with his wake-ups, etc. The plan was to keep him awake longer so that he would wake up for the first time after she returned home.
Imagine my surprise when he fell asleep in his high chair while eating. At 6:30 pm. While I was talking on the phone not two feet from him. Feeding him a bottle. I rung off and tried to keep him asleep but that was a chore. I bathed him and read a few books, taking a cue when he pushed the book out of my hands. A few minutes of rocking and he was out.
Still is almost two hours later. So much for planning.
IN other developments he is handling the toddler-style sippy cup like a pro. During these hot months it is a relief that he can keep himself hydrated.
Monday, August 30, 2004
Click here for the August photo album. Millie stayed home with Tyler today as be valiantly battled a fever. By being happy, energy boy at the doctor's office. Despite his best efforts Tyler did not fool the doctor who found a red throat. He is already much better and will be jumping around tomorrow.
His latest trick is let go of the edge of the crib and fall backwards. If he doesn't fall fast enough, he pauses and then flings himself backwards to complete the fall maneuver. At this point he waits for you laugh.

Tyler is taking a nap after a heavy morning of campaigning. After throwing favors (Cheerios) Sabrina's way, it appears that he has earned her vote. He hopes that she will spearhead an effort an effort to gain the canine vote.
Send us a picture of you wearing your Tyler campaign-wear! A set of ten buttons and woman's tank top have just been added! Click here to visit Tyler's store.

On Thursday Tyler and I went to his first swim lesson. He slept on the way and was ready for action upon arrival. I wedged him into his swimsuit and realized that he has really grown lately. If Velcro could groan under the strain it would have been screaming when I tugged his suit on. Not good.
He was a bit bewildered as we showered off- his first shower-before we hit the pool. The instructor casually invited us into the warm water of the indoor pool. Tyler has been weathering the chilly temps in our small outdoor pool so this was a treat.
I imagined that I would be the only man in the class and would be surrounded by full time moms fresh from the Mercedes SUV's, latte's still warm in their bellies. Served me right to find that the class consisted of another dad and a grandma.
After the instructor sternly advised us that our children would not be swimming laps at the end of the class we launched into our first drill of bubble blowing. I blew bubbles and Tyler looked at me like I had lost my mind. When his mouth neared the surface of the water he held it open, wide-eyed. So much for the reflex to close your mouth. He enjoyed floating on his back much more with his head resting on my shoulder.
Then the main event- the big dunk. We faced our babies and counted to three and then UNDER! Tyler came to the surface without a sound and his eyes were wider still. We did this a few more times and he did very well. Tyler and I were under for just a second but it was a great start. My eyes were stuck shut for fear that my contacts would float off. Next time, goggles.
Had my eyes been open I might have noticed that Tyler was now naked. But it wasn't until I saw his little suit at the bottom of the pool. After fishing it from the water I sat on the steps and tried in vain to reattach the soggy Velcro closure. I got things together in time for ring around the rosey, ending with a dunk for everyone. And me holding Tyler's suit together. During "wheels on the bus" I reattached everything and prayed that there wouldn't be any accidents.
How much would it cost to drain the pool?
The suit stayed on and we spent the remaining time paddling around the pool. Tyler really enjoyed himself and I am looking forward to next Thursday's lesson. When we returned to the locker room Tyler showed his happiness by peeing on me.
Today, we braved 100 degree temps to search for a new bathing suit. Apparently, we are out of season for swimsuits coming away empty handed.
Here are some photos of Tyler's visit to Target.
We bought a toaster. Can you believe the package labeling?

Wednesday, August 25, 2004
To keep Tyler acquainted with the aquatic environment we are going to our first swim lesson tomorrow. Cross your fingers that there aren't any diaper related accidents. What do they charge to clean an entire pool? Yes, these are the things that I think about.
Sabrina safe on the sofa.
The end of a long day.
Who is being fed?
Drop the spoon. Just once. Drop it.

Tyler made his first visit to the library today. We did not browse as Tyler was not using his "library voice". Our other activities included a fruitless trip to the baby consignment store, a visit to REI, an ongoing search for white dress shirts and then home. The day started with a nice long hike in the hills behind our house. Tyler slept.
Now, look at this picture.

Then click here to see today's primate grooming video.

So nice to have the first half week of school behind us. These days are always accompanied by glitches which make for a bumpy start.
Today Tyler and I awoke at 6:30 and entertained each other while Millie slept in. He savored his yogurt.
Then we packed up Sabrina and Tyler for a two hour hike just west of here. Most of the trail was exposed so we dressed Tyler in a thin long sleeve shirt and hat. At one point we pulled off to the side of the trail as a horseback rider came down the hill. The horse was clearly skittish as it came down the trail almost sideways and passed within a few feet of us.
Tyler never noticed the horse as he stared, captivated, at Sabrina.

Tyler has thrown his name into the presidential campaign. We just learned that Nader was denied a spot on the ballot in VA and MD. Tyler is confident that can make the ballot in Florida. Sorry, mom.

While you are online you can catch a minute and a half video of Tyler in motion. Click here.
Tyler survived his first day home with me. Or vice versa.
7:19 am
We had a good breakfast and then we played for a bit. At around 9 he had a bottle and went down for an hour nap. While he dozed I put dinner together. He woke up happy with a massive diaper. Fun.
After an 11:00 yogurt and pasta we went to the hardware store and my school. The visit was part social and part necessity.
Visiting Terrie at Drake.
Earlier, while he snacked, I made brownies. It is a miracle that I didn't eat the whole pan.
Despite my best efforts, and another bottle, Tyler was not interested in another nap. I left him in his crib for quiet time and he lasted about 20 minutes. Oh well. We did a little laundry together and then packed up for a hike. He slept in the stroller.
Much to his relief Millie was home when we returned.
Wednesday, August 18, 2004
Millie and I weathered our first day at school today. Overall our classes look good. We are exhausted after a day of dealing with the poorly written, miserably documented grading software that we support. Teacher were amazingly patient.
Both Millie and I had the same experience when we picked up Tyler from daycare over the last two days. Yesterday she found him busily playing with the other kids just like a real boy! I saw him playing at the Lego table with one of the older kids. Shamsi, daycare provider, tells us that he is everywhere ALL DAY, exploring and discovering.
I feel almost guilty that he will be stuck with boring old dad tomorrow. At least Sabrina should provide some entertainment.
Millie plays a big part in the opportunity for me to stay home two days a week with Tyler. I know that she would gladly trade places with me and yet she shows no jealousy. Perhaps some folks telling her what a wonderful mom she is would ease the separation of these first few days. Her email is hackworth@redwood.org.
Tuesday, August 10, 2004
You may have noticed how clear his eyes are. We paid a visit to an opthamologist and he determined that Tyler's tear ducts have opened and are functioning. It wasn't that long ago that we would find his little eyes stuck shut each morning.
Millie and I are in count down mode for the start of school. I will be training teachers on Friday the 13th and we are in meetings the following Monday. Students return on Wednesday. It begins.

Judging from Tyler's facial expressions, we think that he has another tooth on the way. He has taken these last few arrivals with aplomb and hardly seems the least bit uncomfortable. This would be number six or seven. See the happy boy here.

Click here to see three new thrilling videos. See Tyler eat dry Cheerios at a great Indian restaurant. Or enjoy him playing quietly (is he left handed?). Lastly, enjoy story time with Grandma Joyce.
Tyler's day started with a round of Grandma time at breakfast followed by a test drive of his new tent.
Our afternoon highlight was a visit to Rodeo (row-day-o) Beach with Tyler's new, loaner backpack. Goodbye Baby Bjorn. We both preferred this method of travel. Tyler's head constantly swiveled as he tried to absorb waves ocean birds Sabrina sand fog wind.
Yes, it was cold and deserted. So much for sunny CA. Our local beaches are warmest in the winter months. Go figure.

Millie's crib modifications paid off last night. She also added a night light to his room. Smoother night than we have had in a while as he only roused himself three times.

Cribs should be round
Millie devoted a fair amount of time to Tyler proofing the crib. Velcro, padding and ingenuity and he now sleeps in a padded room. Er, I mean crib.
Why, you ask? Let's rewind to a few nights ago. We listened via baby monitor as woke in his crib and played. Perfect, wake, play, perhaps back to sleep? All went well until his energy took over and he flung himself into the side of his crib. Crack. Silence. Screaming. Begin the feet/comfort cycle all over again.
If you ask me, cribs should be round to allow for the child to fling themselves across the narrowest part without cranial contact. All surfaces should be coated with an anti-bacterial, soft material instead of the current choice. Wood.
Wish us luck.

Divine sponsorship
Photo taken from the Olympic Track and Field trials finals. Not the sponsorship column on the right. Most runners are with Nike but a few seem to have even loftier support. No pressure.

The mural is about 90% complete and I promise full views when it is done. The colors are amazing and we are so appreciative of Eric's talent.
Millie's mom arrived on Thursday and has been enjoying time with Tyler. This afternoon, they were outside our house watching the deer graze.
Last one
In honor of Lance's impending Tour victory, here is a shot of his face looming above the Nike store on Union Square.
The halo is really a fundraising bracelet for his cancer foundation. I took a quick walk through the store and noticed that the people were buying the bracelets by the handful. Equally interesting was that cycling had pushed the basketball displays to the background.

Millie and I carved out some time to see our first movie of the summer. After eight wonderful months with Tyler it was odd to sit in relative silence and not think about "what should I do next?".
With movie viewing opportunities somewhat rare we wanted to make the most of our chance. While not the most uplifting film I have ever seen, Fahrenheit 9-11 was our choice. This is not the be all- end all of documentaries, nor does it provide a "fair and balanced" account of the steps that lead from 9-11 to the invasion/occupation of Iraq. But with Michael Moore I didn't expect fair or balanced. He wears his agenda prominently on his sleeve.
Surprises:
-the Democrats do not receive favorable treatment in this movie. At the White House is portrayed as having a plan, however nefarious it may be. The Dems wait patiently by the phone.
-John Ashcroft likes to sing.
-I had hoped the Moore would have made stronger connections between the dots of Bush Family, Bin Laden family and related financial transactions.
-Moore is VERY supportive of all soldiers. His interviews with those serving in Iraq are a raw counterpoint to the mainstream media's thumbs-up, apple pie image that is their bread and butter (Fox News).
See the movie if you want another viewpoint on the forces that play on the direction of our country and government. Beware that the mid point of the film has many graphic scenes of the horrors of life in present day Iraq, both for citizens and soldiers.
Even if you don't make it to the movie a few minutes at Michael Moore's website could be educational. His links section contained an interesting website, Books for Soldiers, which creates connections between soldiers with basic needs (toiletries, birthday cards, books, movies) and those willing to provide them. There is a bit of a groupie factor to this site that is a little troubling but the message is solid.
Incidentally, Gabriel Daniel Fahrenheit (1686-1736) invented the mercury thermomenter and related temperature scale.
You already know this but the movie's title is borrowed from Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. I have never read the book so I have stolen a description from SparkNotes:
Guy Montag is a fireman who burns books in a futuristic American city. In Montag’s world, firemen start fires rather than putting them out. The people in this society do not read books, enjoy nature, spend time by themselves, think independently, or have meaningful conversations. Instead, they drive very fast, watch excessive amounts of television on wall-size sets, and listen to the radio on “Seashell Radio” sets attached to their ears.

Yesterday we packed up the whole family and headed off to the maul (pun intended) for formal portrait sitting. Yes, Sabrina too. The photographer was very nice and I felt sorry for her given that she is required to wear a propeller beanie. She did a great job engaging Tyler while managing the rest of us.
![]()
Sabrina posed a bit of a challenge. She didn't want to sit on the studio floor because it wasn't carpeted (as I write this she is sleeping on the sofa). Each time the photographer successfully attracted Tyler's attention Sabrina would leap up and run to her. I am not sure what is going on with her in the picture of the children.
Tyler thought that the bean bag was just the thing. We will have to get one for his room. I am sure that beanbag's present some sort of suffocation hazard. This is true of most things that Tyler wants to play with (plastic bags).

Luckily, we had the video camera handy for this moment. Take note of Tyler's facial expressions after each bite. I did try both flavors of baby food. The carrots are good and the green beans bland. The video tells it all. Click here to see it.
Tyler slept until 10 this morning. Very exciting. This was on the heels of a night where we let him cry for FIVE minutes before picking him up. At the five minute mark we would go and tend to him. What a tragic site-there he sat, little arms hung dejectedly at his side, wailing. While he never settled back down he did collapse in Millie's arms without the customary comfort feed.
Tonight we go for longer.

We took Tyler to Dick and Carol's in Sacramento over the weekend. This was his longest car ride, longest time away from us (aside from daycare) and first overnight outside of the bubble.
This trip afforded us a visit with Dick and Carol as well as to see the Olympic Track and Field trials.

We saw the women's 100M with Marion Jones...finishing fifth. She did not qualify for this event but still has the long jump and 200M ahead of her.
Enjoy the photos from our visit here.

I received a very realistic email today purporting to be from US Bank that asked me to follow a link and provide them with personal info. I called their fraud department and they verified that the email was a hoax. They asked me to forward the email to them.
These emails are becoming more clever as evidenced by this latest example. In the past they were poorly worded and lacked even basic spelling competency. This recent example included the US Bank logo and their actual address- both easily found on their website.
Beware.

Are you watching the Tour de France? Thinking that time zones and work will get in the way? Fear not, mon ami, for if you get OLN on your cable lineup than you can see the tour replayed at least four times daily. Be on the lookout for Tyler Hamilton. For more info visit www.olntv.com. Oh, and you will see more Lance oriented material than is reasonable.

I gave the video page a facelift and added two new videos along the way. One of Tyler vigorously burning off energy and another displaying his more thoughtful side.Click here to enjoy.
Crib success
Tonight will be Tyler's third full night sleeping in his crib in his room. We are making use of a baby monitor and trying not to jump at every gurgle. Everyone's quality of sleep has improved now that he is no longer fighting the confines of the bassinet.
Here is our family pic from a 4th of July hike
We have spent the last two weeks conquering many home improvement projects.
-painted the fireplace paneling and a large overhead beam to match the rest of the first floor.
-slogged through Ikea.
-installed a floating shelf (IKEA name-"Lack"- funny, it lacked installation hardware.
-installed two other floating shelves above the fireplace.
-hung a huge mirror in the dining area.
-hung Eric's painting of Richardson Bay.
Lastly, I received a new camcorder battery in the mail this week. It is about the size of a Halloween size Snickers. Look at the box that was used for shipping. Amazing. Could they use more cardboard?!

We put camping on hold for one more day for many good reasons. Try again tomorrow.
So, we made good use of our time with another video. This video is all about watching Tyler eat. Ok, now, remember that

By now you have heard about the German "super tot" and his incredible musculature. Four minutes of research did not reveal where EXACTLY he was born. Could the family have origins in the East? Recall that Germany become whole again in 1990.
Now think back to the jokes about East German athletes, overgrown, hulking, huge. Could uber tot's grandpa have been involved in creating these athletes? Maybe he saved a bit of the elixir for baby boy. Mutation? I think not.

Tyler was thoughtful enough to wake us in time for the 6:30 am take off of the Rutan designed SpaceShipOne. Very exciting. He was enjoying himself so much that we let mommy sleep and retired to the living room/playground and caught the landing two hours later. Clearly a boy with his priorities intact.
So you have heard about the X prize and wondered who else was competing for 10 millions dollars? Oh, and the goal of taking a paying tourist into space.
Click here and decide which flight you would take into space. The da Vinci project is well on their way to success. Heard that their craft is made of WOOD. Puts a whole new meaning to "No Smoking" flight.

A Dark Chocolate a Day Keeps the Doctor Away
First "swim"
On Sunday we took advantage of a pool party at the home of one of Millie's co workers. We threw Tyler in the pool, Viking style.
No we didn't do that. We did get in the 84 degree waters with him aboard an inflatable baby seat. Bear in mind that Tyler already enjoys baths so we were confident that this would go smoothly. Our suspicions were confirmed when his little legs started kicking and he began to chew on the life ring.
We pulled him out of the life ring and swooshed him through the water as his little hands splashed. Millie and I took turns taking pictures with an underwater disposable camera. The film will be ready in a few days and I will post pictures soon.
Reagan's first inaugural
Mom and I shared a memory from Reagan's 1981 inaugural. His was the first inauguration to take place on the west side of the Capitol building. After the ceremony we climbed the stairs to visit the spot where Reagan took the oath of office. I recall running right into Charleton Heston, guest and the ceremony and friend of Reagan. Mom remembers him talking to us. I remember a tall overcoat. This was the warmest inauguration on record with a high of 55 degrees in January. How did I know? Click here for the National Weather Service's official inauguration weather page. Good stories.

It's true. We have talked about Tyler's two lower teeth but never been able to capture a photo. Until now.
He has been flicking his tongue along his lower lip tonight so I suspect there are more on the way. I guess that is obvious, right?

NOTE: this entry contains dirty diaper references. If you eating, about to eat, or have just eaten please refrain from reading.
Tyler delivered his first truly odiferous diaper this afternoon. He didn't seem to be troubled but we quickly switched to mouth breathing. Why the stink? Well, he has been congested since yesterday morning and, two days ago, enjoyed a healthy serving of sweet potato baby food. No doubt more adventures lie ahead. I guess that you could say change is in the air. Literally.
In other news, Tyler experienced McDonald's for the first time yesterday. We were lured by the concept of an adult happy built around a salad and a bottle of water. The toy? A stepometer. Similar to a pedometer, this device is clipped to the belt and counts steps. McDonald's is making a (sincere?) effort to promote a healthy lifestyle. I am just happy that we will have some better options on our next road trip. It has been a year since we last ate at the Golden Arches sometime on the trip through Idaho.
Back to the steps. There is a push to get people to walk 10,000 steps a day as a simple method of reducing the expanding numbers of obese Americans. This method reduces the intimidation factor by talking steps instead of miles or meters or lengths swum. Just walk. Park the car a little further from the office. Take the stairs if you can. Just walk.
If McD's were smart the stepometer would beep when you had burned enough calories to warrant a serving of French fries. Next model, perhaps.
Sadly, our stepometer came with a weak battery so I can't report on my steps. But the salad was good and Millie enjoyed her grilled chicken on WHEAT bread.

Click here for two new Tyler video clips. Both feature his newest love- the activity center. On loan from our friend Jessica, this roundabout of fun gives Tyler the chance to play by himself. We get a little freedom to cook, clean or just catch a breath.
I don't know how Millie handles the sleep deprivation as her's must be stronger than mine. Granted, Tyler is a happy baby and wakes only if he needs to feed or requires a fresh diaper. We both wake up for a feeding but she is, obviously, more involved than I am. The fatigue manifests itself in unique ways. Forgetfulness is the most predominant issue. I have found that multi-syllabic words are at the edge of my mind. I also make a lot of lists.
Knock wood, we haven't had many nights of walking Tyler around the house. Last night was an exception. He was just energy boy, happy and wanting to be awake. So we walked in darkened rooms, Tyler and I, listening to the wind build outside. Then I put him in his bassinet where he happily kicked and sang to himself for about 20 minutes. Eventually, he ate and collapsed. So did we.

A recent article in the SF Chronicle highlighted the work of a local composer who has set some of Rumsfeld's briefings to music. The Poetry of Donald Rumsfeld: Lyrics and Clips features actual transcripts of recent briefings and press conferences. The Unknown is my favorite.
This dovetails nicely with the poem by President Bush Make the Pie Higher.

The last six months have been a wonderful, exciting time that has FLOWN by. Can you believe that Tyler is six months old?
My thoughts return to those last few hours of anticipation. Millie was finally comfortable with the epidural flowing. The clock ticked past 2 am and we wondered when he would arrive. Imagine those times that you have waited for a loved one at the airport. How time slows, other planes arrive, and you are still waiting.
Multiply that feeling of anticipation by a thousand.
After those hours of waiting everything happened so quickly and suddenly HE WAS HERE.

Ah, the feeling after having finished a race. So here we sit, Millie, Tyler, Sabrina, George and I relaxing after a big day.
Bay to Breakers is a 7.46 miles foot race that leads runners and walkers from the San Francisco Bay to Ocean Beach. You can see a map of the course here. There are a handful of serious runners who usually finish the race in under 35 minutes. However, for most of the participants, there is nothing serious about the day. Costumes are the rule and those without clothing of any kind are not a total surprise. There were over 50,000 participants and most had not started by the time the winners had finished.
Millie dropped George and I off at the race start around 7:45 am. We walked a few blocks into the heart of the crowd.
I ended up standing next to one of my students. Crazy.
Eventually, we rounded the corner and passed under the START banner at an optimistic trot. Which was reduced to walk due to the sheer volume of people. George chose the conservative, no weave approach and maintained a good pace. I ziq zagged around walkers and runners and somehow passed George three times. Now, who made the right decision?
Hayes Street split the pack up a bit. This 10.5% grade street starts at mile two and, from a distance, appears to climb straight up.
I heard Millie call to me at mile seven and gave her and Tyler a quick kiss before I raced through the last half mile. We regrouped after the finish area and walked to our pre-arranged rendezvous point to meet George. Meanwhile, Tyler tried to take it all in at once. I thought that his head might spin off. He took it all in stride.
George appeared out of nowhere looking good and feeling fine. He admitted that this was the longest distance that he had ever run. Wow. We moved on to the post-race festivities and took in the monster crowds. The line for t-shirts covered the width of the polo field TWICE. We passed on the t-shirt.
A good time had by all. Click here to view the photos. BEWARE: there is one image of adult, human nudity that Millie captured. There were many more photo opps that we bypassed. Proceed with caution. On that litigious note proceed.

In all the excitement of Mother's Day I didn't fill you in on Tyler's weekend sleeping. Saturday: no naps. Being awake is so much more fun. That night was normal. On Sunday he made up for lost time and slept soundly after our run. By soundly I mean we passed him back and forth as we ate, worked, etc.
We are still caving and keeping him in bed with us. This is a short-term (sighted?) effort to get some sleep. When he is in the bassinet he fussed himself awake and doesn't always go back to sleep on his own. Now that he can roll onto his stomach this adds a whole new dimension- he can't flip onto his back. Not good. Much crying.
Rant
You are most likely overwhelmed by the Iraqi prisoner photos and the ensuing death-sprial of the Bush admin. But let's savor a bit of W's comments from the Pentagon as he gave Rumsfeld a pat on the back, "You're doing a superb job. You are a strong secretary of defense...".
I have written deeper comments on a freshman's report card. Did they lose the cue card? Could W not hear Cheney speaking into the hidden earpiece?!
Last Firday I refrained from commenting but I can hold back no longer. Did anyone hear McCain put Rummie in his place? Kind of a "my dog ate my homework" conversation.
rant over.

Truly a wonderful day. All Millie wanted for her first Mother's Day was to sleep. So Tyler and I complied and played downstairs while Millie slept. We also baked cinnamon rolls for her breakfast treat.
We also put together a few gifts.
My Dad dropped off a beautiful azalea and Sabrina and Tyler gave Millie some goodies from the Body Shop. I put together some Tyler photos for Millie to take to work. Cards came from all over.
While Tyler and I played he sat upright by himself. Just like that. He like to be propped up between my knees so that he can watch Sabrina do anything (in this case, sleep). I moved my supporting hands away from him to see if he could balance kneeling with his hands in front for stability. HE DID! As you can see from the photos he slowly keeled over.
Our day ended with a great run around Phoenix Lake. I did the loop from the Ross Post Office while Millie ran with the stroller for over fifty minutes. Wow.
Click here to see the photos from our day.

With the passing of that evil cold I am able to run again. Just in time, too. Bay to Breakers is on May 16th. This "race" crosses San Francisco from the east to west covering about 7.5 miles. George Day is flying out from PA to race as well.
More photos here of Tyler and I on his playmat.
I write this one handed as tyler sits on my knee having enjoyed another micro nap.

Take a look at the Trixie Update. Specifically, the telemetry section at the top.
The Daily Tyler has that old, tired feeling after viewing this website.
My cousin George had a heart attack yesterday while off the coast of Monterey on a NOAA research ship. The ship put in at Monterey and George was moved to a hospital in Salinas. Word from Aunt Estelle is that all is well and his spirits are good. If a heart attack can be considered mild that's what this was.
George's wife and one of his son's arrive today in SF and will head to the hospital. I don't know if he will stay on for a bit or fly home. Can one fly so soon after having a heart attack?

Visit the photo page for fresh photos of Tyler. His development seems to be in a period of acceleration - finding his feet, rolling over, and becoming more comfortable with solid food.
Totally unrelated: visit www.supersizeme.com. You may have heard about the film director who chronicled his month-long adventure of eating ONLY McDonald's food. This companion website goes a bit further - be sure to click on the "supersize me by the lb." button. Scary.

Tyler has rolled over from front to back a handful of times. Tonight he rolled over from back to front and then back again. Actually I think momentum took over and he just kept rolling. But he is experimenting more and more.
When we put him on his stomach he pushes hard with arms and legs. Unfortunately, his arms and legs push against each other and his arms usually win. Which pushes him backwards.

Five months ago this morning Tyler brightened our day and made everything (except for sleep) better. I am amazed as to how much he has grown and how much fun we have with him.
We walked a few blocks up the Embarcadero and had lunch by the Bay. Then we took a tour of the vessel and enjoyed amazing weather. Tyler and George got along very well. Photos here.
Last week we bought Tyler a playmat of sorts. This is his newest favorite. There are various textures and sounds that can be found on the surface of the playmat. Suspended above are two supports that can hold a variety of thrilling toys. Photos here.

The real message here is that Tyler is fine. My doctor indicated that Tyler is protected from anything more than a cold as long as he is breast feeding. So his little nose runs but otherwise all is well.
This week Tyler has foregone his early evening nap and has maintained a solid bedtime of 9:30. The fact that we have all gotten in bed as early as 8 is irrelevant. He maintains his happy, active mood up until 9:30 and then fusses to sleep quickly. It will be interesting to see if this bedtime holds. If it does we will have to shift it earlier.

There are a score of new photos freshly posted for April. Click here to pick up where you left off.
Last week we paid a visit to Millie's health care provider - her photo starts off the new section.
Rain arrived today just in time to green things up a bit. A few weeks ago it was in the 80's so a return to spring weather was in order.
Enjoy the photos.

We started our day joining our friends Susannah and David for breakfast. Their son Ben was born two days after Tyler.
On our return home I put Tyler in bassinet and let him talk himself to sleep. It lasted for about 35 minutes and ended with screaming. My attempts to talk him down were fruitless - wet diaper.
So sleep was followed by a fun-filled diaper change. Tyler enjoyed his feet.
Uncle Red came over for a visit and Tyler chewed on his hand. His new teeth need a constant workout.
We ended our day with a sunset hike.

We had our first sleepless night watching over a sick baby. Let me begin by saying that Tyler is fine. Millie told me minutes ago that he is having trouble eating because he is laughing so much. Here is a photo of him taken about 10 minutes ago.

Tyler had his second round of vaccinations yesterday. He took them like a champ and barely cried. Just screamed a bit. He was fine for about three hours as evidenced by this photo taken on the way home.
Then he slid downhill with a sudden fever and much crying. Using a digital thermometer (under the arm, thank you very much) I could watch his temp climb to somewhere just under 102. Not terribly high but his mood deteriorated just as fast as his temp rose. We gave him some Tylenol and he glazed over a bit. This cycle continued for the rest of the day.
Today was somewhat better and he seemed to turn the corner about thirty minutes ago. His fever broke sometime earlier today but he is most likely sore and out of sorts from the shots. I took some comfort from having seen Sabrina go through similar reactions as a puppy. Never did take her temperature, however.
Off to bed. More tomorrow.

Millie is sick with a bad cold so she and Tyler spent most of the day napping. This paid off for both of them. I take full blame for the source of the cold as it made my week that much more fulfilling. She had open house at her school and so Tyler and I had a man's night in. Smoked cigars, watched the wings channel and had a wholesome dinner of grilled cheese and baked beans.
On Friday night Millie gathered her strength and we went over to Katy and Red's to celebrate his birthday. He received a digital camera from his family and I look forward to adding his photos to this collection.

Here at milsteadfamily.com things are normal by comparison. Be sure to view the newly added photos page to see Tyler and Grandma Joyce from her recent visit. When she last saw him he was one week old and he had four settings (eat, sleep, cry, SCREAM). Now he is four months old and he goes well beyond his original factory options. Fun for all.
After taking Tyler (in his jogging stroller) on a fifty minute run Millie and I decided to give him his first taste of solid food. Click here to see the results. In theory, rice cereal will stick to his ribs and help him to sleep longer. Which means that we will sleep longer. Check in tomorrow for the latest developments.

Millie's back is often sore. This is a (potential) time of the Spike moving further into position.
Friday, November 07, 2003
Millie has experienced a day of baby activity and resulting discomfort. She describes the sensation as if, "he is looking for more room and has run out." It may be that he is sitting in one place for too long.
